Passengers wait to drop off luggage in Austin as airline cancellations disrupt travel

Travelers suffered long delays at US airports as wintry weather and mass cancellations caused widespread disruption after the holiday weekend. Video posted on Twitter by Catherine Marcou shows the lines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas on Wednesday morning, December 28. According to FlightAware, 127 flights from Austin had been canceled before 8 a.m. and another 26 were delayed. In a video released Tuesday evening, Southwest Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan said difficulties caused by the cold had forced the company to cancel flights. “Our network is very complex and the operation of the airline has all the parts, especially the planes and the crews, that are kept in motion to where they are intended to go,” Jordan said. “We have real work to do to get this right. For now, I want you to know that we are committed to this,” Jordan said. The U.S. Department of Transportation said Secretary Pete Buttigieg had contacted Jordan and Southwest to “convey the Department’s expectation that Southwest meet its obligations to passengers and workers and take steps to prevent a situation like this will happen again.” Credit: Catherine Marcou via Storyful
