Man with World War I explosive in rectum causes bomb scare, hospital evacuation

The case left the doctors surprised.

A French hospital was partially evacuated on Saturday after an elderly person arrived with a World War I artillery shell in his rectum.

The 88-year-old patient visited Toulon’s Sainte Musse Hospital to remove the old explosive, but instead caused a “bomb scare,” French publication Var-Matin reported.

“An emergency occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Saturday evening that required the intervention of bomb disposal personnel, the evacuation of adult and pediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies” , a hospital spokesman said.

“We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework,” the representative added. “When in doubt, we took every precaution.”

Bomb disposal experts at the scene determined there was little chance of the shell exploding inside the man.

“They reassured us that it was a World War I collector’s item, used by the French military,” the hospital said.

Stunned doctors later began the process of trying to remove the object – which measured almost 20cm long and more than 5cm wide – from the man’s rectum.

It is believed that the perverted patient inserted the article through the anus for sexual pleasure.

“An apple, a mango or even a can of shaving foam, we are used to finding unusual objects inserted where they shouldn’t be,” stated one doctor. “But a shell? Never!”

Doctors were forced to take the old man into surgery, cutting into his abdomen to remove the relic.

According to the hospital, he is now doing “good” and is expected to make a full recovery from the operation.
